The Sawatch Energy Resource Center (SERC) focuses on the strategic, sustainable and profitable development of renewable energy products derived from locally managed resources. Anticipated products during initial operation include:
- Activated Carbon Charcoal is carbon. Activated charcoal is charcoal that has been treated with oxygen to open up millions of tiny pores between the carbon atoms.
- Wood pellets, which are manufactured from beetle-killed timber and other forest residues and used for residential and commercial heating
- Biochars, also derived from dead timber and used to capture heavy metals at mining reclamation sites and to stimulate revegetation
- Syngas, which is produced by the gasification of biomass, and which serves as a precursor to multiple forms of industrial fuel.
As technology develops, so too will the type and range of products our partners research and manufacture at SERC. Please explore the Research section of this site to learn more about these efforts.
